Abstract
The goal of this text is to do an interpretative analysis of the song cycle Brentano Lieder, that consists of six songs that musicalize a collection of Clemens Brentano's poems. Regarding the structural analysis of the piece, one of the goals is to find, if there exists, a continuity in the way that the cycle was composed or if the songs are merely a series of musicalized poems whose only point of congruence is their author. The second goal of this work is to base interpretative decisions on the harmonic structures and do an anylisis of the different tonal areas used in every song as well as an analysis of melodic motives and the use of Strauss's written indications in the score as a guide for the correct interpretation of the song cycle. Finally, using the translation of each poem, the intention is to find not only a common topic in all of the songs, but a story that could help cohere the whole piece and understand the relationship between music and text present in the cycle.
