Abstract
The purpose of this work is to understand the general phenomenon of alterity, the other-being feature of the other
or what it is experienced to be so, and to highlight the intimate interweaving of the self and the dimensions of the
other that go through and base every authentic encounter with a singular other. These dimensions,
phenomenologically addressed upon authors such as Paul Ricoeur, Corine Pelluchon and Emmanuel Lévinas, are
made of, on the one hand, the aspects in which the own identity finds itself bounded, vulnerable and paradoxically,
a stranger for itself, and on the other hand, the experience of the other’s face as a trace of the infinite Other:
constitutive and unavoidable responsibility of the own subjectivity. Given this extended perspective of alterity, it
is examined too the main philosophical positions that have tried to give reasons about the other’s being as an other
according to their attention to or possible harmonization with the two dimensions of alterity already mentioned
and, nevertheless, frequently ignored. Therefore, this research pretends finally to set a bridge between these
phenomenological analyses and a hermeneutic of the will in the Aristotelian ethics so it order to better illuminate
the effective union between human action and the interpellation coming from a tout autre (according to Jacques
Derrida’s expression) which triggers it, from any/absolutely other, origin of a true responsibility and the
paradoxical care/sacrifice of the self that is demanded by the care/sacrifice of the other.
