Abstract
Pets in cyberspace: between instrumentalization, ventriloquism and posthumanism is an undergraduate theses/research which explores and discusses the relationship human beings have with planet earth. It does so by analyzing a close subject for the investigator which is how humans are relating with their pets and how these relationships are being shared through social media.
First, the research explores what defines a pet in the 21st century. It begins with their domestication and works through their inclusion into the home. It also explains why the bond between humans and their pets has grown to be so strong.
Then the research analyses how different communication strategies and resources are used in three different pet related Instagram profiles. Specifically, it shows how a brand is being created and positioned and which discourse is used in their posts. Afterwards each profile is linked to one of four different approaches in which one can place human's relationship with their pets. These were previously described (theoretical background) and are: dominionist, humanist, protectionist and posthuman. These categorizations aren't static. In fact each individual can present each of them in different degrees and situations.
Lastly, the research discusses why exploring human beings relationship with planet earth from a more familiar scenario (pets) is useful as it enables us to speak about our condition as earthlings who share this planet with equally important beings.
