Abstract
Nowadays, Colombia presents large quantities of plastic PET waste, so the overall objective of this investigation is to design
a material from plastic PET waste to get benefits in the construction field as an initiative to reduce the environmental impact
derived from inefficient waste management. The study of background information and the results analysis were a key aspect
to complete the final design of the material, for this reason methodologies developed by other individuals were fundamental
in this work. Tests were applied to observe the performance of the designed material, using as a reference the ASTM C67-17
standard that involved compression, flexion and absorption tests. As a solution, a scale block was developed from the use of
PET and other components such as fiberglass to try to improve the mechanical properties in comparison to the specimen of
the selected sector. To reach the solution, an injection molding method was used and the process was adjusted to obtain the
desired design. After that, the different samples were subjected to the tests mentioned above through the use of equipment
such as the universal machine, the thermoforming center 911, among other equipment used.
Based on the results obtained, statistical tests were applied in order to verify the existence of statistically significant
differences between the samples analyzed. The selected material had favorable results in certain properties such as
compression and absorption in comparison with the specimen of the sector taken into account. A high budget or not finding a
production technique for the development of the block could have been restrictions for the project development. In order to
verify the correct design of the material, the ASTM C67-17 and D695-15 standards were used as a reference and the
specimen of the sector was analyzed under the same conditions in order to corroborate the results obtained. When observing
the results, it was possible to demonstrate that the PET and PET + 5% Fiberglass were the samples with superior
performance in the compression test, however, the PET was selected as the best material since it presented a better
performance in the flexion test. Also, it presents better result in the environment and financial indicators in contrast to the
other samples.
