A state of art concerning the use of artistic expressions in the pedagogy of English languageResumen
Abstract
The following document is an exercise in formative research that seeks to develop a state of
the art on the application of the arts as a method of teaching and learning a foreign language.
One of the reasons why this research is done is due to a report made between 2015 and 2016 by
the firm specialized in teaching foreign languages EF EPI (Education First, English proficiency
Index), which showed that the level of English in Colombia is deficient. According to the report,
the low level of English in the country is due to the fact that teachers do not know how to teach
the language and the methodologies implemented encourage a rote, verbalist and repetitive
knowledge without taking into account the interests of the students and without giving space to a
meaningful learning and creative teaching that could be achieved if the arts were implemented in
the foreign language classrooms.
Taking into account the above, the terms "state of the art", "foreign language", "teaching and
learning a foreign language", "visual arts" and "the seven fine arts" are some of the fundamental
elements that make up the theoretical framework of this research exercise.

On the other hand, for the elaboration of the methodological framework and the structure of
the following state of art the article " La guía para construir estados del arte" by Olga
LucíaLondoño, Luis Facundo Maldonado and Liccy Catalina Calderón, published in 2014, was
taken as a reference to make a descriptive analysis of ten documents published between 2003 and
2017 in which the use of the arts such as literature, music and visual arts is demonstrated in
foreign languages pedagogy.
Therefore, in the analysis of results it was found that most of the researches stated that during
the period in which artistic activities were carried out in the foreign language classes, the
apprentices were interested in learning the language and they acquired more knowledge about its
structure. Likewise, this research exercise is an invitation for future language teachers to enrich
their teaching methodologies using the different types of art as the engine that inspires and
motivates students to want to learn a language.
