The Sands of Time - Obra para orquestaZusammenfassung
"The Sands of Time" is a work for orchestra written in a single movement, divided in four sections. The composition process was based on a reflection on musical tiem, its perception and expression, which is expressed in the first chapters of this document.
The first chapter presents the problem of musical time. The word "time" alone can have many meanings according to the context, and its meaning has been a subject of scientifical and philosophical debate. Because of this, this chapter mulls over the meaning of word "time" in the context of music, and the relations that it has with other types of time, referring to scientific and philosophical views of this concept.
Chapter two is about the individual perception of musical time. Without the intention of making a scientifical study of perception, here is shown how some musical elements can alter the musical perception of the listener, and how temporal relations can shape a musical work.
Chapter three focuses on the musical elements which are more deeply related with the expression and development of musical time. For each of these elements some of the advances developed in the last centuries are shown, some of these used in the work.
Chapter four analyses the structure of "The Sands of Time", and gives a few examples of how manipulation of musical time is used in this work.
