The exiles of the Risorgimento. Mazzinianism in the Southern ConeResumen
Abstract
Between 1835 and 1848, tens of exiles from the Mazzinian movement left the Italian Peninsula to settle in Uruguay. From Montevideo, they continued their political struggle by founding new newspapers, establishing alliances with other diaspora communities and building military forces, which took part in local conflicts. In this way, exile was a fundamental experience for the revival of a Young Italy in the Rio de la Plata area, the development of republicanism in the Atlantic world and the creation of new connections betweenthe Old Continent and America.
