Association between ideal cardiovascular health score and relative handgrip strength of community-dwelling older adults in ColombiaAstratto
To the Editor:
In response to the increasing burden of mortality and morbidity,
including cardiovascular events and geriatric syndromes, the
American Heart Association established the 2020 Strategic Impact
Goals to promote ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) and to determine
the metrics needed to monitor it across populations.1,2 Ideal
CVH is described as attaining the ideal criteria for 4 health behaviors
[nonsmoking, physical activity at target levels, body mass index
(BMI) <25 kg/m2, and recommended healthy diet] and 3 health
factors (total cholesterol <200 mg/dL, blood pressure <120/
<80 mmHg, and fasting blood glucose <100 mg/dL, without the use
of medication) called Life’s Simple 7.
There is also evidence regarding the role of handgrip strength
(HGS) on ideal CVH in children,3 adolescents,4 and young adults.5 A
recent meta-analysis suggested that the number of ideal CVH
metrics (attainment of >3 metrics) is a strong predictor of cardiovascular
disease and mortality.2 Considering the recognized
importance of preserving muscle strength for optimizing health in
older adults,6 it would seem worthwhile to investigate the
potential relationship between ideal CVH and HGS.
In this context, the aims of this study were as follows: (1) to
examine the prevalence of ideal CVH in Colombian older adults, and
(2) to explore the possible associations of relative HGS (expressed
relative to anthropometric variables) with ideal CVH score,
including health behaviors and biological factors.
