Analysis of knowledge associated with the use of food and medicinal flora in the community of San Francisco, Acandí, ChocóResumen
Abstract
On cultural and biological subjects, the department of Chocó is one of the most diverse in Colombia; nevertheless, the systematization and registration of the ethnobotanical knowledge in the region are scarce and limited. Taking this into account, the present investigation had as main objective to document and analyze the current state of knowledge associated to the food and medicinal flora in the community of San Francisco, Acandí, Chocó, through quantitative ethnobotanical research methodologies. Through semi-structured interviews applied to 14 connoisseurs and farmers belonging to the community, with whom tours were carried out on the forest surrounding the village, agriculture areas and home gardens, 116 plant species were identified included in 101 genera, belonging to 56 botanical families, which are used by the community for medicinal and nutritional purposes. Through structured interviews applied to 66 members of the community about the recognition of some plant species, its uses, the frequency of use and the trajectory of the traditional knowledge, it was determined that mothers are the main transmitters of traditional knowledge, and that there are significant differences on the recognition of species and it’s uses among the younger generation that participated on the study (10-19 y/o) and the intermediate generation (20-49 y/o) analyzed, and among the younger generation and the older generation (>50 y/o) analyzed. Additionally, significant differences were found between the knowledge hold by men and women, that can be attributed to the study focus, specific for medicinal and food plants. No significant differences were found on the use frequency of the plants among generational groups or gender groups. In consequence, it is proposed to evaluate mechanisms to reinforce and promote the appropriation of traditional knowledge that are in tune with the needs and priorities of the community, and to promote ethnobotanical research in different regions of the Chocó department.
