English Title
Review of the techniques for the characterization of the diet in freshwater mammals, do they use molecular tools?
Abstract
Knowing the composition of the diet of freshwater mammals is relevant to identify their role within the network of processes that establish the functioning of ecosystems. The mechanisms for characterizing the diet are varied, however the implementation of molecular tools in these is unknown. To get to know it, eighty-three documents were reviewed in a thirty-year window, registered in a database and in an academic search engine. Twenty-four of thirty-nine species were found to have publications in this regard. The species with the highest number of studies were the threatened, emblematic and / or charismatic, in contrast, the least studied were some endemics and with different conservation categories. Of the categories used to analyze the characterization of the diet, the post-ingestion one was the most used. The inclusion of two subcategories and a technique is proposed in order to allow the classification of all the mechanisms used. Finally, it is recommended to expand the use of molecular tools due to their precision in identifying the components of the diet at the species level.
