Abstract
The main purpose of this qualitative study is to analyze the living and health conditions of women who care for children diagnosed with congenital Zika syndrome (SCZ). A descriptive analysis of sociodemographic variables was made and qualitative techniques and instruments were used to assess the life and health conditions of the caregiver. Participants were chosen among residents of Huila and Atlántico, departments with the highest number of reports from SCZ to the National Surveillance System (Sivigila) in the 2015 and 2016 epidemic period.
In this qualitative study, those effects associated with ZIKV were explored in depth, seen not only from the biological point of view of those who suffered from the disease, but from the perspective of those people who still live daily the consequences related to this agent. Specifically, it was possible to characterize the experiences of women caregivers of boys and girls with SCZ, regarding the knowledge of this disease, the specificities of the care of these boys and girls and the effects that this care brought to their lives.
This paper showed the direct and unknown effects of the pandemic and also opened a new investigation line alongside this thematic prioritizing care, as a fundamental activity within homes affected.
