Interpretative analysis of the cycle "Sept mélodies, Op. 2" by the composer Ernest ChaussonResumen
Abstract
Durign the process of becoming a professional musician, I have observed how for many of my colleagues the most important thing is to make themselves known, to show through music their various abilities in order to receive some kind of recognition. Through this work I seek to explore the tools that allow the interpreter to become the path that communicates to the listener the intentions that each composer projects in their works.
The French composer Ernest Chausson, despite not being so widely recognized at the moment, has a quite expressive and moving repertoire, for which, also with the aim of making his work more known, the Sept mélodies, Op. 2 cycle will be the focus of this work. Likewise, it is important to expose that three of the five poets whose poems were musicalized by the composer in this cycle: Théophile Gautier, Leconte de Lisle y Armand Silvestre, were part of Parnassianism: a literary movement that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century, which sought impersonality by rejecting the poetic "I", and through descriptivism, creating beauty in the artistic work from a dreamy and imaginative but depersonalized character and away from one's own feelings, resorting to exotic themes, especially from classical antiquity. (Fair, 2013: 15 - 109).
This distancing raised the possibility of generating an exuberantly varied aesthetic discourse; this way, each work provides diferent elements that provide more diverse expressive resources.
Throughout my formation in lyrical singing, one of the techniques to channel the various expressive resources of the interpreter focused on the search for characters as an expressive vehicle where various interpretive tools are implemented; this way, the various analytical and interpretative resources are at the service of these characters in order to achieve a more effective communication of the composer's intentions. For this reason, when these interpretive identities are mentioned, the expression "Character" (with a capital letter) will be used.
Taking this work, each of the songs will be analyzed in order to create a character for each one of them. The characters will emerge from the data obtained through an analysis between text and music. This way, the purpose will be to personify each of the characters in their different situations, embodying the message that each song transmitted to me in the process.
