Abstract
In Bogotá, Colombia, the activity of the bike taxis (cycle rickshaws) is not yet
regularized. Despite the mayoralty initiatives to censor 4,646 vehicles and the Veeduria to
regulate its components, there is still no standardized design that guarantees good working
conditions for the driver and safety, comfort and inclusion conditions for passengers. This is
why the objective of this study was to design a bike taxi with better ergonomic, aerodynamic
and safety properties compared to some of the current designs.
The first two preliminary designs were created from anthropometric information of
the driver population collected by the researchers. These designs with different shapes and
wheel composition were subjected to flow simulations in SolidWorks to determine if there
were considerable improvements in performance. As the two designs were remarkably better
than the current design, one of them was chosen because of manufacturing costs, technical
feasibility and overall structural weight.
Following the shape of the chosen design, the dimensions of the cabin were
determined using the anthropometric measurements processed by a statistical analysis. With
these dimensions and taking into account national technical standards of accessibility, the
structural design of the bike taxi base was created. Then it was subjected to tests of static
analysis of SolidWorks to ensure that the structure was suitable for construction in
accordance with the technical regulation of the RFEdA.
After verifying that the structure of the base meets these standards, two designs of the
roof structure were created. This structure is lighter than the base and will only support the
tarpaulin that covers the vehicle. To choose between the two designs, a semantic differential
test was carried out for the two roof designs and for the current design. The test resulted in
drivers and passengers preferring one of the designs created by the researchers.
The blueprints of the complete chassis of the bike taxi were generated and the flow
simulation was done again to measure the aerodynamic design performance. As the
aerodynamic performance worsened with respect to the first preliminary designs, the rear
part of the vehicle was modified, with which the air resistance was greatly reduced. The final
design is shown in illustration 1, 2 and 3.
Subsequently, the structure of the base was manufactured with the material defined
in the static analysis and all the necessary elements were coupled to make it functional. This
prototype allowed researchers to carry out the Frimat test on one of the current models and
the prototype with simulated weight. The result was that the prototype manufactured by the
researchers reduced the physical load of the drivers throughout the day. Other self-report
methods also showed the improvement of the final design compared to the current one.
All procedures were carried out in accordance with Colombian Technical Standard
NTC 5655, which establishes principles for the ergonomic design of work systems, which
will specifically take into account the Environment, Medium, Fatigue and Workstation. In
addition, following different rules and documentation, the researchers created a technical
data sheet with the elements that the rickshaw must have following different standards,
safety requirements and legal papers.
