Readings of the spirit : restlessness, plasticity and sacrifice in Hegel’s absolute knowingResumen
Abstract
The following document presents an insight -prone to being signaled as heterodox- into one of Hegel’s most challenging philosophical notions. Absolute knowing is traditionally understood as one of philosophy’s speculative moments par excellence, a moment in which the self (self-certainty) becomes the absolute itself, and as a result reality in all its extension and depth is reconciled with pure thought. This unity would signal the closure of dialectic’s negative movement exposed throughout Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. The different readings exposed throughout this dissertation disagree with this perspective and propose a different understanding in which this closing moment transforms itself into a new opening that, instead of reconciling thought with reality, can generate the possibility to conceive the transformation or reality itself. The readings exposed in this text come from different backgrounds anchored in the philosophies of the late twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty first, and what is attempted in their exposition is the weaving of a thread that crosses through these readings in a way that allows absolute knowing to become a relevant notion for contemporary philosophy.
