Amidst the shadows, my arms always open : variations of the ghost in "La amada inmóvil" and Amado Nervo (1909-1919)Resumen
Abstract
The present study aims to inquire about the multiple facets and iterations of the ghostly in Amado Nervo’s (1870-1919) "La amada inmóvil, versos a una muerta" (1920), written on the occasion of the demise of his partner, Ana Cecilia Luisa Dailliez, in 1912. More precisely, it tries to elucidate the possible links that, in the middle of Modernity, by means of the phantom and other spectral tropes and metaphors, are formed between poetic discourse and the human search for meaning, howbeit not necessarily for resolution, for the traumatic mourning for the loss of the object of love and desire. To achieve this, it pursues, on the one hand, an analytical and interpretative reading of the poems—the purely textual, as well as its apparition context and Modernismos’ traits contained within—and some other of the author’s writings (i.e., other poems, chronicles, and aphorisms); on the other hand, a theoretical scrutiny based both in critics and scholars of the Mexican poet, as well as some philosophers, mainly Jacques Derrida and Giorgio Agamben, and their definition of "ghost".
