The love for a videogame : analysis on Colombia's League of Legends Field and it's Economy of Symbolic GoodsResumen
Abstract
The present work addresses the professional competitive scene of League of Legends (LoL) as an e-sport in Colombia, the objective conditions of its structuration, and the processes of production, circulation and consumption of symbolic goods within it. "E-sports" refer to the video games professional practices, institutionally constituted and regulated. Utilizing Pierre Bourdieu's field, capital, habitus and economy of symbolic goods concepts as the main tools for analysis, this paper characterizes the professional field of LoL in Colombia and explains the different logics under which the agents and institutions that compose it operate. Starting from the premise that social structures exist in two ways, as objective relations and as a practical knowledge of these relations by the agents, this thesis has two moments of analysis: an objectivist moment, where the objective positions within a structure and the relations between them are apprehended; a subjectivist moment, where the perspectives that the agents have on reality from the position they occupy in the field are analyzed. The intensity of the relationship maintained with the video game, expressed in the notions of hardcore and casual, made possible to understand not only the structure of the field and the distribution of its capitals, but also the way in which the different practices of the agents are oriented and valued in a differentiated way depending on their position in the field.
