Information system for the quality of the thyme crop in the company Always Fresh FarmingSommario

In Colombia, exports generate an essential income to the economy of the country, which is why is important to lead studies and actions concerning exterior commercialized products. Currently aromatic herbs, like thyme, face high quality controls to get to their final customer. The enterprise Always Fresh Farming is responsible for the production and commercialization of thyme. Throughout its trajectory it has shown different kinds of problems that has prevented them from achieving their productivity goals.
Therefore, the necessity of designing an information system is laid out. To do this it was required a diagnosis of the present situation of the production process, where it was shown that it does not have a permanent control of the information from the activities done in the sub processes of the beds. Given the above it was necessary to do an analysis of the variables that could have a major influence in the final’s product quality. According to the crucial variables found in phases of the process an experimental design was outlined. Limitations of time, costs and staff were considered to define the variables for the experiment. The variables were type of seeding, dusting and type of tool used in the cut. The results of the experiment allow to resolve that the three factors individually have a significative effect on the final product quality.
Based on the results, the planning of the information system begins. This system follows the guidelines of AFF, and it is modeled considering the information of each phase of the process and the activities conducted in each of them. Is supplemented by two maps in which the users can observe the pashes and conditions of all the beds in the crop. In addition, the system provides the option of generating a report in Power BI, where tactic and operational indicators are found, supporting decision making.
To validate the correct functioning of the proposed system and expectations of AFF, the enterprise conducted a pilot test, which had constant support from the authors of this study. Firstly, an explanatory video along with an instructive was made, with the aim of training the staff who will be using the tool. Afterwards the enterprise carried out functioning tests of the system under different guidelines, this allowed the verification and evaluation of the tool by three methods.
Finally, with the results obtained in the pilot test, satisfaction and economic indicators were considered. Moreover, it is expected that once the information system is implemented, the pounds rejected will decrease by 23% which would generate an increase of $7,446,400 pesos of the export thyme ingress. As the system generates a positive impact in the economic level, it would be advised that AFF implements the tool.
