Abstract
The present study evaluated the effect of a UV-B photo-selective netting on physiological variables (relative water contení, electrolyte leakage. chlorophyll fhiorescence and photosynthetic pigment concentration). growth (leaf area. total dry mass. leaf area índex, specific leaf area. relative growth rate. and root shoot ratío) and yield on green crísp lettuce plants. and contrasted them to) plans growth wíth no cover and under a conmion black sliade net. To accomplish this. an experiment was designed and carried out in the San Javier farm (Nemocón. Cundinamarca). It was a randomized block design wíth tkree repetitions per treatment. where the measures were taken. Four data collections were canied out with a two- week interval between each other: at 30.45. 60 and 75 days after transplant. The facihtíes and equipment used was provided by the plant physiology lab at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana of Bogotá. Statistically significant differences were found (p<0.05) in growth and yield variables. The UVB photoselective netting had an increase of 79% when compared to the conmion netting. and a 30.8% with the control. Growth indexes showed few significant differences: the leaf area índex (LAI) wasn't affected by the UVB netting but was significantly reduced in plants grown imder the traditional black netting. The specific leaf area (SLA) and the relative growth rate (RGR) didn t show significant differences maintained through time. No time-conseived significant differences were observed on physiological variables either. which suggests that the differences found in growth and yield weren t directly related to the other monitored variables and there may be other enes affecting them.
