Este artículo trata sobre la aparición, el desarrollo y el declive de la arquitectura de cine en Caracas desde 1925,cuando se erigió el primer edificio creado específicamente para ese uso, hasta 1960, año en que se abrió el últimode estos “palacios de películas”. En el transcurso de estas cinco décadas, la construcción del cine sustentó la modernidadde la ciudad en crecimiento, atenta a las tendencias de su tiempo. Desde entonces, la función cinematográficase ha refugiado en el interior de los grandes centros comerciales que se han multiplicado en Caracas, como sustitutodel espacio público al aire libre. Este proceso ha implicado el cierre progresivo de los antiguos cines, cuyos edificioshan sido demolidos, abandonados o transformados en otros usos que distorsionan por completo su arquitectura ysu presencia que alguna vez dio vida en el tejido urbano.
Abstract
This article deals with emergence, development and decline of movie theater architecture in Caracas from 1925, when the first building specifically created for that use was erected, to 1960, year when the last of these “movie palaces” opened its doors. Over the course of these five decades, the cinema building underpinned the modernity of the growing city, attentive to the trends of its time. Since then, the cinema function has taken refuge in the interior of the large malls that have multiplied in Caracas, as a substitute of open-air public space. This process has implied the progressive closing of the old movie theaters, whose buildings have carelessly been demolished, abandoned or transformed into other uses that completely distort their architecture and their once life-giving presence in the urban fabric.
