desplazamiento, secuestros, guerrillas, paramilitarismo, ‘guacas’, pandillas, vida militar,
Abstract
Questioning audiovisual narratives and how they intertwined with the “right to the truth” and the reconstruction process of collective and historic memory makes it necessary to face another
question: what will we tell future generations about the things that happened? In this work we
established a time line with 35 telenovelas ― from 1974 to 2016 ― written and produced about
the Colombian conflict and the associated phenomena: massacres, drug trafficking, internal
displacement, paramilitary groups and death squads, gangs, military life, counterintelligence
and, very recently, demobilization and reinsertion of guerrilla members into civil society. It is
important to take into account that, as a country, we have been witnessing these narratives
take place on TV for 43 years; they have taken on a double role of both telling the story and
shaping the way it is told through the aesthetics of the telenovela as a genre. We explore this
double role that Colombian TV has taken: as a historic source that registers and puts context on
a story and as a medium that produces and broadcasts a story of the Colombian nation. In
recognizing all these factors and their unique relationships, we acknowledge the telenovela and
its narrative as a reference in constructing an emblematic story, historic memory and the
national identity we have been narrating to ourselves.
