Abstract
Thinking about old age and becoming old has always aroused some concern, which is why, throughout history, different ways of understanding and living it have been sought. However, in the current era, in which technology prevails, old age has become a serious problem because it does not produce or yield the same as it used to in youth. Thus, different solutions to this so-called problem have been postulated. These solutions range from delaying and medically disguising the aging process, to postulating the extermination of the old ones. Faced with this bleak panorama, the philosophical task becomes urgent, because through it, it is possible to discover and think about other horizons of the human constitution that go far beyond the body and its decay. Using philosophy to approach and understand the aging process, to welcome it with affability and to recognize in old age its meaning and value, will make this stage of life not tedious, but pleasant. Then, philosophy allows the understanding of this stage of life, facilitates the mourning and the farewell of the previous stages, and allows an affable meeting with the process of the undoing of life and the final encounter with death.
