Abstract
This study is a replica of the work "The relationship between beliefs and the increase of the affective filter in learning english as a foreign language" published by Arenas Reyes in 2011.
The research, carried out at the Javeriana university with 50 students of The Modern Languages degree, is a qualitative-quantitative study that aims to determine the relationship between beliefs and affective filter, investigate the nature of these beliefs and finally explore how students face their affective and attitudinal realities that define their participation in English class. The instruments used for the data collection were: the recognition survey, the BALLI survey to detect the high affective filter and finally the semi-structured interviews to know about the beliefs and experiences of the students regarding their participation in English class. The data collected show that there is a type of beliefs where the students are disabled in activities related to oral communication. These beliefs have a strong influence in the high affective filter. Also, it was found that the nature of these beliefs is cultural and is socially constructed. Finally, it was evident that students invest in different actions to face their affective and attitudinal realities of which they are willing.
We can conclude with this research that the high affective filter itself is an abstract categorization of the students’ behavior. We argue that what limits the action of the student is a system of beliefs socially and culturally constructed, and those are the basis for the students to act and adapt themself to their affective realities in order to the learn a language.
