Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a poet and a nun from New Spain (17th century), of enormous knowledge and extraordinary quill. In her century, the spanish theocratic system was repressive in many ways, but to her it corresponded in a special way that it was not tolerated that a woman could be intelligent and a poet, and still less being a nun. One of the fronts of censorship was the religion, based on distorted biblical exegesis. But nevertheless, by the power (buried and subversive) which religious habit and baroque aesthetics granted her, she knew how to reappropriate and resignify biblical rhetoric with which they harassed her to build a robust and coherent theological knowledge, and thus defend her true vocation, which was literate and intellectual. The purpose of this paper is to examine these defensive and challenging strategies of the hieronymite in some of her most famous works, considering that her poetic enterprise aims at a cleaning of the image of God that belongs to her as a creature whom Providence entrusted virtues of erudition.
