Abstract
On 2014, the largest migration wave in the history of Colombian-Venezuelan relations was unleashed causing that on November 1,2018, more than 2'300,000 of Venezuelan people left their country in recent years and that 50% of them arrived to this day to Colombia. Thus, from the beginning of this situation the president of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro and the president of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, gave statements on the subject and were participants by action or omission of this crisis; making possible to analyze from a poststructuralist point of view the reasons that generated the humanitarian problem caused by the Venezuelan migration to Colombia.
To carry out this activity, an analysis of the statements of both presidents was elaborated based on the contributions of Michael Foucault and Teun A. Van Dijk because through their studies, it is possible to see how power relations play a determining role in the creation of reality through language and how discourse is the main resource of dominant groups, through which, discourse contributes to the reproduction of power, abuse of power and domination.
Addressing the Colombo-Venezuelan migration crisis from a poststructuralist perspective made possible to demonstrate the relationship between language and social meaning, and to understand how reality and truth can be affected by the good or bad use of discourses. In short, thanks to a discourse analysis like this one -which reviews how the elites in charge of power determine realities and truths from their power relations-, it was possible to understand for example: the meaning of the closing and opening of borders, deportation of people in both governments; the instrumentalization of national interests by governments to free themselves from the responsibility of the humanitarian tragedy; and the use of exclusive discourses to distort the Colombian-Venezuelan reality and dehumanize the crisis; among others.
