Abstract
The founding of Villavicencio and its spatial configuration by the middle of the 19th century, obeyed different criteria from those prevailing in the formation of Hispanic cities. The idea of capital as a main principle of space involved a particular configuration of this city in the piedemonte llanero. Therefore, this research delves into the impact of Villavicencio’s first business class on its spatial configuration and that of its immediate region. For this purpose, the research has three parts. The first part presents an overview of the geography of the Orinoquia and the first colonization phase towards the piedemonte, especially toward Villavicencio. Second part, ponder on the relationship between business class activities and its impact on the geographical and productive space of this city. The third part, embrace the description of many projects and iniciatives of the Villavicencio’s business class and as in the face of some obstacles of the late 19th century, these could not materialize. The last part is dedicate to a general conclusion on the transformation of the geographical, economy and social space of Villavicencio and its immediate region.
