Sommario

To live in a space from which something totally different was expected. Immersed Distances is a narrative that evidences my days in San Basilio de Palenque and the construction of an documentary installation that narrates the distances perceived in the territory and in its sociocultural dynamics. The text presents an analysis of Palenque based on the idea of three types of distance: first there is the geographical, which speaks of the history of this space, the first place free of slavery in America, the perfect hiding place and the ideal place for there to be a series of unique traditions; the social distance, the way in which the palenqueros are shown daily, their culture, which because it is intangible heritage of humanity is a great tourist focus. Finally there is the intimate distance, the most difficult to represent, because it is present within their homes and within their routine, is the one that manifests itself when it is not being observed or recorded, where their traditions are not routine, as is shown in the social distance, but where in addition the palenquera language is used to have the privacy that denies them, to be part of a space that is being recorded daily as an exotic object.
While I was in Palenque I understood the distance, the intimate, the shared as a way of life as a way of being and remaining in the middle of everything and nothing, a form of historical resistance against the crimes of time.
