Ontology and ethics : a dialogue between Heidegger and LévinasResumen
Abstract
The core of the problem between Heidegger and Levinas is the concept of metaphysics. What does the transcendence of human being really mean? Is it the temporality of Dasein that leads him to be a pastor of being, or is it, on the contrary, the substitution of subjectivity as being-for-the-other? In other words, is metaphysics an ontology or an ethic? This research is not guided to investigate whether there is an ethic in Martin Heidegger's philosophy, since it shares with Gadamer the assertion that this issue is a desideratum and an extreme audacity. Further, Heidegger rejected this problem in different situations. This research does not aim to present Lévinas as an overcoming of the Heideggerian ontology either. On the contrary, it is intended to explore, through dialogue, the criticisms made by Lévinas to Heidegger's thinking during the twenties (especially that evident in Being and time), to show the gaps in this criticism with relation to vulnerability and hospitality, as well as possible answers to it. I consider that Heidegger proposes a fundamental thought about Dasein that needs to be reconsidered because it has been misrepresented or synthesized partially and incompletely.
