Relationship of periodontal desease with endothelial dysfunctionResumen
Abstract
Background: In recent years, the relationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and periodontal disease (PD) has aroused great interest from the scientific community. However, the nature of this association is still unclear. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between periodontal disease and endothelial dysfunction (ED) in patients older than 40 years. Materials and methods: 52 patients were included in the study, 26 with stage III and IV grade A and B periodontitis and 26 with biofilm-induced gingivitis in reduced periodontium or maintained periodontal health. A complete medical history, laboratory tests and vasodilation test mediated by brachial artery flow were performed. Results: Of the 52 patients included in the study, 2 patients belonging to the control group presented endothelial dysfunction. The study showed no statistically significant differences in the initial endothelial measurement (p = 0.47), final endothelial measurement (p = 0.44) and flow-mediated vasodilation among patients with and without periodontal involvement (p = 0.99). Conclusions: No relationship was found between periodontal disease and endothelial dysfunction. However, lower arterial dilation was evidenced in patients with periodontits when compared with periodontally healthy patients. Keywords: Endothelial dysfunction, periodontal disease, periodontal treatment, cardiovascular disease
