Disabled societies : a look to disability in the world of advertisingResumen
Abstract
Disability in Colombia, has been treated as a taboo subject, as it has been in many parts of the world, to the point of not speaking about it and preferring to avoid thinking about it, on the contrary, disabled people are the ones who have to adapt to the world and its logics. This has brought as a consequence, that tools such as advertising give a speech addressed to non-disabled people, excluding and making it harder for disabled population to get access to inclusive advertising. Even if the message also turns out to be interesting for people with disabilities, the lack of support elements such as braille, makes it harder for the message to reach this population.
It is necessary to mention that the segregation towards these social groups has been a constant issue through history; it is nothing new and it is quite possible that it keeps happening. Everything that goes against what is considered as “normal” turns out to be unknown and therefore, rejected in a social atmosphere. This has created social narratives in which disabled people are stereotyped as “ a burden”, to the point of becoming a product, considering the fact that a total focus market has been created based on their condition.
In this paper we will analyze the stereotypes that advertising has sold in regards to disability, in order to propose an advertising communication model that is not only inclusive, but also becomes a starting point to rethink the social ideas regarding disability.
