Salient objects : A cognitivist reinterpretation of Franz Brentano´s immanent objectivityResumen
Abstract
This document is an attempt to rescue the intentional object of Brentano. Intentional inexistence as the mark of the mental has many interpretations, however, it is still valuable to examine its theoretical bases since some of its elements have been distorted or ignored. Brentano, in his definition of intentional inexistence, leaves some loose ends for which he is accused of being idealistic or dualistic and others in which he poses perplexities where it is not possible to know with certainty if the intentional object is “reference to a content” or "direction towards an object". Likewise, Brentano does not explain in his theory critical aspects such as the type of identity of intentional objects, if they have one.
In an attempt to clarify some of the previous points, the present document is structured as follows: in the first chapter the concept of empirical psychology defined by Brentano is developed and the origin of the intentio is discussed. In the second chapter, a brief discussion of the object is made as the basis for Brentano's subsequent discussion of the intentional object and its definition. The third chapter talks about intentional objects and cognitive preponderance. The last chapter corresponds to the conclusions. The most important conclusion of this document is that the intentional object is plausible, its origin is the information that the individual apprehends from the data about the objects and the environment, and this information contributes to interpreting the world and is an important part of communication between individuals. If intentional objects can be found in the mind and language is another mental phenomenon that serves to communicate what is in the mind, intentional objects can be compared to language since there is no reason to think that mental processes change radically from one to another. At this point is where the criteria of cognitive preponderance that Giora proposes come into play: frequency, familiarity, conventionality and prototypicity or stereotypicity that can be used as the identity criteria for intentional objects.
