"Pan, trabajo o muerte" : The artisans of the Democratic Society of Bogota (1849-1854)Resumen
Abstract
Historical documents left by Colombian artisans in the nineteenth century have allowed us to take a closer look at the political participation that this group of people undertook during the mid 1800s. Specifically, the founding of an organization known as Sociedad Democrática (SD) had caught the eye of historians from the 1970s up until 2018, due in no small part to this association having been the first people's organization (in other words, created by and made up of individuals from the masses) to have existed in the entire country. Taking this into account, my investigation's main question is, "Why were the birth, development, and end of the SD important for the artesans of Bogotá?" The answer to this question, which I propose as a hypothesis, lays in two periods of posible "radicalization" that the artisans would have gone through during the seven years that the SD lasted. I'd like to inform the reader that, therefore, there are two objetives embedded within my research. The first one, to present the organization belonging to what then was the largest subset of workers in the city, all the while presenting the way in which this guild learned to distance itself as a group of people different from the upper class. Second, to add to the already rich amount of literature pertaining to the study of mid-nineteenth-century artisans, by shining light on the those who were members of the SD
