Woman Trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation : an analysis from the migratory phenomenon 2015-2018Resumo
Abstract
Woman Trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation continues to be a risk for migrants in Guatemala. The situation in the Northern Triangle that is not absent from criminal gangs, corruption, violence and other aspects that put at risk the integrity of people, has generated a migratory wave to the north where the common factor that those who undertake the journey have, is the desire to improve their situation. Guatemala is a mandatory crossing to the United States, so several women have arrived in this country.
However, the condition in which women migrate is not safe, and that is why they become potential victims of human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation or smuggling of migrants , where the latter is a mitigating factor for falling into the former. A number of migrant women have been found to be victims, who have been able to count on appropriate accompaniment thanks to international cooperation and the work of the SVET. However, many studies, aids and actions of the relevant entities are hindered by the corruption and complicity of officials with whom these networks operate.
In conclusion, in 2019, the fight against types of slavery such as sexual exploitation is still ongoing, and in the face of migration, which is a phenomenon that has taken an important place in the international agenda, there are multiple challenges, since this process can be an indicator of risk to fall into these networks, for those who carry out it in unsafe conditions given their situation of vulnerability. The international community has held meetings to combat this, but it is still insufficient for the magnitude of the problem. The difficulty is not to see a migrant as a development possibility as proposed by the Global Pact on Migration, because there are many situations, whether they want to or not, migrating becomes a survival action because the reality in which they live gives them no alternative and women, according to the figures, are in constant possibility of being treated sexually, but it is more the fear of staying than of leaving.
