Characterization of the hospitalized patients of the otolaryngology and maxillofacial unit of the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio from February 2001 to October 2012Resumen
Objetivo: Caracterizar la población de los pacientes hospitalizados en la Unidad de Otorrinolaringología y Cirugía Maxilofacial del Hospital Universitario San Ignacio desde febrero de 2001 hasta octubre de 2012.Materiales y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo, observacional, de los pacientes registrados en la base de datos de la Unidad de Otorrinolaringología y Cirugía Maxilofacial por un periodo de 11 años. Las variables que se estudiaron fueron: sexo, grupo de edad y diagnóstico principal.Resultados: Se logró determinar la frecuencia demográfica de nuestra población hospitalizada. Se obtuvieron datos de sexo, edad y diagnóstico de los pacientes hospitalizados.Discusión: La frecuencia de hombres y mujeres hospitalizados fue similar. La mayoría de los pacientes estuvieron dentro de los 18 y los 59 años de edad. Las patologías más frecuentes fueron las de oído. En los hombres fue más frecuente el trauma craneofacial, y en las mujeres, la celulitis facial de origen odontogénico. El 2010 fue el año en que más pacientes fueron hospitalizados.Conclusiones: Por medio de la información recolectada se obtuvieron datos suficientes acerca de la población hospitalizada en nuestra unidad, los cuales pueden ser útiles para la planeación de nuestro servicio.

Results:
The frequency of the characteristics
of our hospitalized patients was obtained. There
were available data about the sex, ages and diag

noses of our patients.
Discussion:
The frequen
-
cy of men and woman was similar. Most of our
patients were between the ages of 18 to 59 years
old. The diseases of the ear were the most frequent
pathologies. In men the principal diagnoses was
craneofacial trauma, and in women, facial celluli
-
tis from dental origin. 2010 was the year that more
patients were hospitalized.
Conclusions:
Through the information collected we obtained enough data
to characterize the population of our in-patients.
