Geo-graphies of rural english teachers : narrative analysis in Palocabildo, Tolima and Granada, CundinamarcaSommario

The armed conflict in Colombia has been a phenomenon that has affected different areas of Colombian society. Thus, due to the conditions imposed by the war, strategies have been created - such as the Special Plan for Rural Education - to solve or mitigate the problems caused by such situations. Likewise, there are actors who are immersed in the educational processes that have also been affected. Among these, teachers stand out, since their perception has not been taken into account within the processes of reflection on the construction of educational policies that recognize the social dynamics derived from the armed conflict. Thus, this research asks what it means to be an English teacher in the rural areas of Palocabildo, Tolima and Granada, Cundinamarca. This is done by identifying the roles played by rural teachers from their teaching practices and from their contexts; describing the physical and human resources used by teachers in these areas; investigating the pedagogical and training links generated by teachers for the educational institution where they work; and, detailing the position of rural teachers in relation to educational policies related to the teaching of English in Colombia in rural areas.
With regard to this, the theoretical framework that supports this research is composed of three chapters that correspond to: a) Rural education in Colombia; b) The teaching of English in Colombia; and, c) The importance of narratives in the field of education. The first chapter treats the concepts of education from a general perspective, in order to later understand Colombian education and thus arrive at the notion of rural education. This is achieved through the perspectives of authors such as Aguerrondo (1999), Helg (1987), the Ministry of National Education (2010), Orozco (2018), Feu (2004), among others. In addition, the components and flexible educational models of rural education are described from the perspectives of authors such as Boix (2011), Cruz (2018), and López (2006). The second chapter deals with the notions of teaching, the theories of language teaching and learning, foreign language in comparison with second language, and the teaching and learning of a foreign language in Colombia and in its rural contexts by authors such as Jackson (1964), Komisar (1966), Peters (1966), Skinner (1957), Piaget (1976), Saussure (1959), Pato and Fantechi (2012), Wenger (2000), Brown (1989), among others. Finally, the third chapter is in charge of analyzing the narratives from a global perspective, to then define the teaching narratives. This is achieved through authors such as Polkinghorne (1988), Ricoeur (1999), Arendt (1958), Mateos and Blanco (2011), Bolívar (1998), MacIntyre (1981), McEwan and Egan (2005), among others.
In order to carry out the understanding of being an English teacher in rural areas, qualitative research is carried out, since it allows the collection of the perceptions of the teachers interviewed from the idea of keeping their opinions based on their realities. In this way, 4 interviews were carried out with two teachers from Palocabildo, Tolima and two teachers from Granada, Cundinamarca. Such interviews have allowed us to understand the role of English teachers in the rural education process that takes place in the places mentioned above.
The analysis of the perceptions obtained by the teachers in the rural areas of Palocabildo, Tolima and Granada, Cundinamarca was done by creating matrices to categorize and understand them. From this process, four analytical categories emerged: 1) The roles configured by rural English teachers in Palocabildo, Tolima and Granada, Cundinamarca; 2) The physical and human resources available in rural contexts; 3) The pedagogical and training links established by the teacher to the institutions; and, 4) The policies established by the education secretariats and their implications for the educational processes. Such categories made it possible to identify the meanings of being a rural English teacher in the areas of Palocabildo, Tolima and Granada, Cundinamarca.
Finally, four general conclusions are identified, namely: a) the formation of four roles in the practice of rural English teachers; b) the identification of difficulties related to resources available for the teaching of English as a foreign language; c) the strengthening of links with institutions; and, d) the influence of departmental policies on decision-making by rural English teachers.
With regard to the first conclusion, it is stated that rural English teachers have four roles within their practice. In this sense, they are individuals who contextualize their educational practices and who are in constant training. This allows them to be relevant pedagogical agents within their communities as they are resilient and seek the best achievements for their students. In relation to the second conclusion, teachers detail the difficulties related to the resources available for the teaching of English as a foreign language. In fact, they report that, in response to the lack of adequate materials, they must create strategies especially designed for the rural context.
Additionally, in relation to the third conclusion, rural English teachers in Palocabildo, Tolima and Granada, Cundinamarca strengthen their links with institutions by creating projects in favour of them. In fact, the creation of departmental networks calls for the effort of each one to work in their own place. Finally, with respect to the fourth conclusion, it is possible to infer that departmental policies influence the decisions made by rural teachers, since they must comply with the guidelines proposed by government entities.
