Musical considerations of the first movement of William Walton's concerto for viola and orchestra from different interpretative referencesResumen
Primrose (1946 y 1954), Yuri Bashmet (1988), Yehudi Menuhin (1968), Maxim Vengerov
Abstract
When approaching a musical work, it is important to take into account different facts. they shall be historical, social, conceptual, technical or performance facts, which are quite important to achieve an artistic approach to the music.
In this case, "The Concerto for viola and orchestra ”by William Walton is one of the most representative for violists today due to the technical and interpretative challenges that are linked to the emotions, colors and tones of the instrument.
It is the subject of academic studies, recitals, workshops, festivals and competitions.
It is also a requirement for orchestral auditions around the world.
The violist and composer Paul Hindemith premiered the William Walton Concerto for Viola and Orchestra in 1929.
Later, it was subsequently played by Lionel Tertis in 1930. In both cases the composer worked along with these soloists. However, there are no recordings of these first two performances.
The first recording was made by Frederick Riddle in 1937. Later, we can find recordings by William Primrose (1946 and 1954), Yuri Bashmet (1988), Yehudi Menuhin (1968), Maxim Vengerov (2004) and Antonie Tamestit (2018) which also left a significant legacy. These will be the recording references taken into account when analyzing the different technical and performance challenges that are found within this concerto. Additionally, there are two published versions of the orchestral score (1929 and 1962) by The Oxford University Press and revised by W. Walton himself, where changes in orchestration, tempo, articulation and dynamics are reflected.
With the guidance of Professor. Sandra Arango, one will analyze, compare and justify the technical, performance and body considerations that are relevant and essential when approaching the first movement of the concert. This in order to propose solutions to technical, musical and body difficulties (vibrato, shifting, bow strokes, scales, tempo, character, color, sound, physical preparation, concentration, breathing, relaxation).
