Looking at Europe sideways : the transition from LAFTA to LAIA and its relationship with European integration theoriesResumen
Abstract
The Latin American Free Trade Association (LAFTA) was founded in 1960 in order to achieve greater industrialization and greater income generation for Latin American countries, through the establishment of a free trade zone, which, in the medium term, would become a common market. By being founded synchronously with the European Economic Community, the ideas of the European integration model influenced the development of the Latin American integration project. Thus, when moving from LAFTA to LAIA - The Latin American Integration Association - in 1980, it seemed that the new theories and approaches of the european integration influenced the transition, as well as when the LAFTA was conceived. However, there was no influence whatsoever. For this reason, the present investigation seeks to describe the main factors of the non-influence of european integration approaches in the transition from LAFTA to LAIA; the first, the political context of the 70s in Latin America. The second, the singularity of european integration theories.
