The regional stability of the Middle East : a look from the dispute for power between Iran and Saudi ArabiaResumen
Abstract
The monograph presented is based on establishing the influence of the religious vision of the State and the geopolitical interests of Iran and Saudi Arabia in their foreign policies in relation to the regional stability of the Middle East after the so-called Arab uprisings in 2011, a situation that it generated new conflicts and various sources of internal confrontation, as in Syria, as well as the consolidation of non-state actors. Within this scenario, new foreign policy instruments emerge through political and economic support to both armed groups and political currents from different countries, that is, an interest in regional influence and power is generated that will be explained from the cases of these two states.
Iran and Saudi Arabia are two countries with great military and economic powers, which after the Iranian revolution of 1979, have been involved in a confrontation that can be analyzed from a more political than military perspective, as well as their differences in terms of religions of The State (Sunni in the Saudi case and Shiite in the Iranian case) has created a division, which they use as a political platform to reach the purpose of their interests to become a regional power.
The analysis of this problem acquires relevance because in the first place, it is a conjuncture issue that is affecting the dynamics of both the international and regional systems. Secondly, given the importance of the concept of regional stability for this area, there is a lack of factors that allow it, therefore, the aspects that have affected it during the 21st century will be analyzed. Third, considering that both Saudi Arabia and Iran are aspiring regional powers in the Middle East and have an important relevance in the international system, an approach to the way in which these two countries confront each other in religious and geopolitical terms will allow understand how the political and military decisions that both make affect the stability of the region.
