The drummer, performer and composer : The example of Dave King and his interpretative austerityZusammenfassung
By proposing a creative-musical process based on pre-existing elements (a tradition, a school, an academy, an environment), a problem arises, in this case: the knowledge about current jazz composition and the low visibility, or absence, of the figure of the composer-drummer.
Throughout the 20th century, the evolution of the drums as an instrument and its contribution to popular music is evident: from the modest sets of Papa Jo Jones, to the most modern and ostentatious, as would be the case of Tony Royster Jr. In the same way, this instrument has allowed its performers to expand its function, with the purpose of reducing the gap between the performer and the composer. Despite the preponderance of the role of sideman, there are excellent historical references that demonstrate the impact that this instrument generates as a tool for musical composition.
In the decades from fifties to the eighties in the United States, there were important figures such as: Benny Goodman, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Jack Dehjonette, Tony Williams, Paul Motian, among others. Currently, the practice of composition and direction continues to be nurtured by names such as: Tyshawn Sorey, John Hollenbeck, Makaya McCraven, Nate Wood or Mark Guiliana. In Colombia, although the practice of jazz is quite young, there are several important exponents: from Plinio Cordoba and Guillermo Navas (who were among its pioneers), to the contemporary Victor Bastidas, Juan Camilo Anzola and Jorge Sepulveda, who led very influential projects in experimental music and jazz in Bogota.
Thus, being a drummer, my research is based on the role or function that drummers have historically had in this genre, also considering the contexts in which they have developed. This research starts, then, with the question: what are the musical inputs of the jazz drummer-composer, in the Colombian and international context, and how do they come together in the process of composing a piece of music?
In order to shed a light on these questions, this paper will analyze the interpretative and compositional behavior of the drummer and composer Dave King, with the purpose of finding some creative inputs that allow me to compose seven pieces of my own in which the value of the drummer as a composer is evidenced.
