Living or surviving with the disease : narration of the suffering of the old with chronic kidney diseaseResumen
Abstract
The path that a person with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) travels is difficult. From a biomedical perspective, CKD is considered a silent disease, except in the advanced stages of the disease. The narration of the illness by suffering Colombian men and women exposes the confrontations, the breaks, the suffering, the exclusion, the abandonment. On the other hand, it exposes the accompaniment of relatives, the constant struggle and the importance to cope with the illness. The above is exposed under three main categories: pathology (biomedical dimension), disease (social dimension) and illness (subjective demension), plus the categories of social suffering, care and religion.
The condition, together with the disease and pathology, are a fundamental part of understanding the path of the illness and providing a more humane treatment. The caregiver is part of the path of the disease, suffers and struggles with the patient. Social suffering is closely linked to suffering insofar as there is a precarious and dehumanizing health system. Religion fulfills the role of understanding and transcending on this path. The illness trajectory is related in the context of isolation, which creates a unique context for the narration. The components exposed in the text are vital to understand better the process of the sufferer that can lead to better treatment and support.
