Analysis of the impacts of gold mining on the economic dimension of food security and social vulnerability in the Istmina Chocó area (2005-2019)Resumen
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the impacts of gold mining on the economic dimension of food security and the social vulnerability of rural households, in the municipality of Istmina, Chocó, and its effects on the social vulnerability of rural households, in the period of time between 2005 and 2020. It was a case study using a qualitative-descriptive methodology through semi-structured interviews and review of secondary information, to address how mining could impact the socioeconomic dimensions of food security in the municipality, likewise, if this was mitigated through the institutional response and the public politics. The results indicate that the main impacts of mining in terms of food security occur as a consequence of the environmental deterioration, which lead to the loss of certain sources of food such as fishing. The higher income from mining allowed access to food in the markets which, in a way, offset the negative impacts and, in a certain way, implies that the region changed from producer to importer of food. However, since it is not a stable income for many of the households, it does not reduce the social vulnerability associated with food security. The most affected are the barequeros because they have the highest levels of social vulnerability. Mining is not a stable source of income for them and they are the most affected by the loss of food due to the deterioration of the land and water. With the information available, it is very difficult to determine the role of the state in mitigating environmental impacts and in food security
