Religious and Moral Discourse in the Medical Treatises of Saint Hildegard of Bingen : Relations between Humans and "Non-humans"Resumen
Abstract
Saint Hildegard of Bingen was a 12th century Benedictine nun who became an abbess, poet, writer, musician, counselor, preacher and physician in a world dominated by male traditions. Hildegard's work is extensive and scholars have concentrated on studying mainly the texts of her prophetic trilogy. However, in this paper, a contextualized reading is made of the saint's medical treatises: Physica and Causae et curae, texts rather neglected by literary criticism, at least in Spanish. I pay special attention to the sections on animals in the Physica, which is structured as a medieval bestiary. This part of the book allows the problematization of the relationships between humans and animals in the Middle Ages, to the point where we can speak of humans and "non-humans" rather than animals. In addition, I study how, in these sections on animals, the medical discourse, which has predominated in the text, gives way to the religious and moral discourse. Thus, it is possible to make analysis of the text that imply, more than the care of the body, the care of the soul and the correct sexual behavior of human beings.
