On-demand dubbing : fandub reception vs. profesional dubbing receptionResumen
Abstract
In a globalized world where there is a greater access to the exchange of information, the entertainment industry reaches an international audience, which implies the translation of their content to different languages. However, there are occasions in which said translations are not done in some languages, and others in which the translations do not reach the expectations of the audience. The present investigation seeks to identify the factors that affect the reception of the Spanish dubbing, done by professional and amateur translators, of three selected songs from the fictional cartoon series Steven Universe, since in certain cases the followers have expressed a preference for the dubbings done by other fans, also called fandubs or fandubbing, over the ones done by professionals. This is a qualitative investigation based on the analysis of the triangulation of the results from interviews to a dubbing company and creators of amateur dubbings (better known as fandubbers), comments from the fans of the series about the dubbing of the selected songs, and an assessment of said dubbings. The investigation is developed and supported under many concepts from the translation theory, such as translation methods and mediums, specifically in the audiovisual medium of dubbing and its restriction. The investigation is oriented towards the creation process and the product itself. The theory of reception will also be taken into account, which sees the audience of a product as an active participant not a passive one. In this investigation a specific interpretive community will be observed: The Spanish speaking fans of the series.
