Degradation of cigarette butts through a sequential physical-biological processResumen
Abstract
In Colombia and the world, cigarette butts are disposed of daily, which represent a negative impact on the environment due to the accumulation of toxic substances. Every time consumption increases, therefore in search of alternatives to solve this problem, carried out this work to investigate the capacity of Pleurotus ostreatus and Phanerochaete sp. in degrading these pollutants. For this, cigarette butts were collected in the Pontificial Xaverian University, its respective characterization was carried out in terms of weight, morphology and functional chemical group. Following this, a treatment with photolysis (UV-C) was performed to then analyze again all the parameters mentioned previously and identify possible changes, among which it was obtained that the decrease weight after photolysis was significant. Once these data were obtained, the biological treatment using the butts in a medium composed of salts, in which Pleurotus ostreatus and Phanerochaete sp., respectively, were inoculated to evaluate its growth. The growth of the fungi was followed for 30 days taking measurements of its radial growth, obtaining that P. ostreatus presented higher growth (90 mm) compared to Phanerochaete sp. (75.9 mm). Finally, the same initial parameters in which it was observed, through Scanning electron microscope (SEM), colonization of cigarette butts and adherence of hyphae to it. On the other hand, regarding the functional groups identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the appearance of alcohols and the decrease of carbonyls associated with cellulose acetate.
