Abstract
Double depression is a psychiatric condition that has run through my entire life, from the experience of symptoms, the side effects of medication, my interpersonal relationships, to the way I conceive myself as an individual, trying to find a way where you can live with it without understanding it as a limitation. Through my process as a student of lyrical singing and my personal growth as an individual, the personal approach towards the understanding of music has been, in the same way, intimately and deeply penetrated by my experiences as a result of this mental condition, thus permeating my capacity for interpretation and artistic expression as a singer. Thus, the works that are part of the undergraduate recital attempt to outline the different symptoms of clinical depression and seek to make the experience of depression more tangible to the viewer as a form of artistic expression.
The choice of the repertoire and, more specifically, of the work to be analyzed, was made based on the text and its interaction with the proposed musical language, traversed by the different emotions that surround, from personal experience, depression double. Gustav Mahler's piece Um Mitternacht summarizes and centers this experience from the analysis, initially textual, and how it directly affects the musical composition and its subsequent interpretation. For this reason, it was decided to concentrate the analysis on a single work that allows to elucidate and break down in a more detailed way not only the general aspects of a text and its relationship with music, but also how an interpretation is possible as a result of a personal condition that permeates the artistic expression per se. Consequently, an in-depth study will be carried out on this work from the analysis of the text and how it affects the music composed by Gustav Mahler and, in parallel, an impact analysis that the double depression has on the interpretation of this piece as a result of the analysis of all these variables.
