Characterization of micro and mesoplastics and their association with biofilms in the Gualí Wetland (Funza, Cundinamarca)résumé
Abstrait
Currently, plastics have played an important role in technological development and in the daily life of the human being, generating an increasing demand and, consequently, a greater production around the world becoming part of the polluting materials with the greatest environmental impact. Usually, these large pieces of plastic in natural environmental conditions suffer degradation processes, giving rise to smaller parts, known as nano, micro, and mesoplásticos, these being, a potential threat to the flora and fauna of ecosystems, especially aquatic ecosystems, leading to the deterioration of environmental quality.
In the same way, these small pieces of plastic, due to their origin in petrochemical are not easily degradable becoming substrates binding to different organisms, and, therefore, forming biofilms, which affect their transport and buoyancy leading to damages in transport and buoyancy.
Similarly, one of the ecosystems most affected by this problem, and little studied, are wetlands, these ecosystems play an important role in the hydrological cycle of the maintenance of the environmental quality, but due to the presence of micro-and mesoplásticos have been affected; that reality is not alien to the wetland Gualí, located in the municipality of Funza, Cundinamarca, due to the urban expansion and industrial development of the area.
Therefore, in the present work, a study of the presence of micro and mesoplastics in the Gualí wetland was carried out, through the characterization of color, size, morphology and type of polymer. Subsequently, procedures were carried out to determine the association between biofilms and the polymer surface.
We determined the presence of plastic pieces in the wetland, collecting 82 items, inside of which 65% are mesoplásticos (<25mm-5mm), 29% are microplásticos (<5mm-1µm) and 2% correspond to macroplásticos ( ≥25 mm), the predominant color is transparent, in the form of pellets and corresponding to high density polyethylene (HDPE), representing 41%, in the same way, he managed to determine the association of biofilms on the surface of the polymer by using the technique of staining with crystal violet modified accompanied with scanning electron microscopy.
