Poverty discourse at the UN : power guidelineResumen
Abstract
The main objective of this study is to analyze the representations that are made about poverty and impoverished subjects in the UN web discourse in 2015. The concept of poverty is complex and broad and for this reason a Latin American perspective is adopted by through the concept of contextual poverty. Through the analysis of the corpus "End poverty" of the official website of the United Nations, the discursive strategies present in the discourse on poverty of the UN are identified both from the view of the image and the verbal text. In the results, it has been possible to verify that the image-text relationship, especially with the photograph of the UN, since through the recycling of information and decontextualization an abstraction is given that establishes a general image with a complementary relationship where the text interprets the image. While identifying the legitimation strategies, they highlight the authorization, the moral evaluation and the rationalization that constitute the naturalization of the phenomenon of poverty. However, throughout the study another strategy was identified: Spectacularization through recycling in Eskinde Debebe's photography. This calls for reflection on the role of the UN and how it is currently the most influential institution in the international system.
