Design of a women's saddle for road bicycleResumen
Abstract
The negative effects on the comfort of female cyclists bring with them physiognomic problems, such as pain in the crotch, buttocks and intimate parts. Comfort is a major factor for women who practice the sport of cycling. For this reason, through the implementation of engineering and manufacturing tools, a prototype saddle was designed with an opening mechanism that allows the adjustment of the saddle width taking into account the distance of the ischial tuberosities of women. Also, the implementation of a removable nose, which gives the cyclist the option to choose whether she wants to do the sport with the absence or presence of this. This saddle design was made with the purpose of allowing each cyclist to adjust it to her own size and taste. The designed saddle was used to evaluate whether two geometric variables (width and presence/absence of the nose) have an effect on the cyclist's experience in terms of comfort. To do this, a group of 9 cyclists were measured and used the prototype saddle with different configurations of width and nose position. From this, it was obtained with 95% confidence that saddle width has a significant effect on the perception of comfort, while the presence/absence of the nose has no significant effect. Additionally, the performance of the saddle developed from a sentiment analysis model was evaluated. It was found that 78% of the surveys showed a positive perception of the saddle prototype, while the remaining 22% showed a neutral perception.
