Design of an accessory for delivery people in bicycle mitigating biomechanical risk factors, case studyResumen
Abstract
Bogotá D.C. is currently the city in Colombia with the highest number of delivery people on bicycles linked to delivery platforms. The capital city has approximately 50,000 active delivery people, out of a total of 75,000 in Colombia, who focus on the service of transporting various products to users registered in this e-commerce type digital platform. As a result of this activity, home delivery people on bicycles are exposed daily to risks inherent to their work, which commonly have a negative impact on their health and well-being. In view of the foregoing, the aim of this research is to design an accessory for home delivery people on bicycles in order to mitigate the ergonomic risk factors faced by these. The study and subsequent evaluation of the aspects allowed identifying the determinant variables that generated a greater impact on their health, mitigating biomechanical risk factors, for which the postural and safety conditions of 96 daily workers were analyzed. To achieve the objective already stated, biomechanical ergonomic assessment tools were taken into account in the performance of ‘stress tests’ in the laboratories of the university in order to evaluate the feasibility and viability of the prototype of the selected proposal considering the NTC5655:2018. Subsequently, a sample of 22 volunteers were selected to compare the current situation with the prototype using direct measurement tools and thus be able to evaluate the proposed design of the accessory where the applicable solution positively impacted their postural conditions, safety and productivity compared to the current conditions of the delivery workers. This project focuses on a proposal for the design of an accessory to be used by delivery people on bicycles. This accessory has an adjustable grill, a backrest with cushions and a support system to the bicycle allowing versatility in the use and adaptation of this, also allows minimizing the biomechanical risk factors present in the research subjects. To achieve this design, the following criteria was taken into account: 1) Diagnosis and evaluation of the risk factors of the bicycle delivery person, 2) Design of prototypes of accessories that minimize the risk factors identified later, 3) Selection of the accessory through an assessment of feasibility and viability of the design prototypes and 4) Evaluation of the selected accessory for the delivery person by means of biomechanical ergonomic assessment tools in a sample of bicycle delivery people or volunteers. Initially, a diagnosis for 96 delivery people was generated on the current conditions of the delivery workers, considering the activities they perform during the working day, considering ergonomic and observational assessment tools. During the design process, 4 prototypes were generated to fulfill the objective of the research project, identifying their characteristics, feasibility and restrictions in order to select the final design. The final design was evaluated using wearable wireless multi-sensor systems CAPTIV (biomechanical ergonomic assessment tool) in a sample of 22 volunteers, according to the data collection protocol to compare the current situation with the accessory. Finally, it is concluded that the use of the accessory has a greater impact on those areas of the body that have direct contact with the accessory, because it mainly reduces the weight of the suitcase in the shoulder area and therefore influences the arm areas. For this reason this impact is classified as positive, intermediate and negative. Taking into account that each impact is determined by the nature of its transverse (pitch), longitudinal (roll) and vertical (yaw) axes. The positive impact occurred in the areas of the body such as the head, lower back, right arm and right hand. The intermediate impact was in body zones such as the arms, right and left forearm, right thigh, right hand and left calf. Finally the negative impact was in body zones such as the head, lower back, left arm, right forearm, right and left hand and right and left thigh. It is important to note that these results could be affected by factors such as a larger population of right-handed participants than left-handed ones, the physical condition of each volunteer, the conditions in which they performed each phase of the tests, the nature of the elements used for the development of the test, among others.
