Memento Mori, reflections on light and lightnessResumen
Abstract
Without the intention of transgressing sensitivities or simplifying a process as difficult and personal as grief, the conceptual, narrative and thematic programming of this work seeks to broaden the vision around the final moment of the vital experience, rescuing the hope and light necessary for a more aware and optimistic tomorrow through the nuances of pain and darkness.
Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder (The Lightness) is a song cycle with poems by Friedrich Rückert written because of the death of his two youngest children. Although the theme is excessively painful and intense, a deeper reading of the music and the text allows to find in the songs the opportunity for the performers and the public to connect both emotionally and interpretively, as well as musically and technically. Although the darkness of the music and the poems permeates the deepest sensitivity and recalls the lightness of life, it is contrasted with bright and specific moments of light and peace, revealing not only the artistic and musical quality of the composer, the performers and the poet, but also, baring his soul, making evident their hopes and fears in a subject that concerns everyone.
The concert program finds balance and contrast in the second part (The light). Two songs from the cycles Vier ernste Gesänge by Johannes Brahms and Lieder des Abschieds by Erich Wolfgang Korngold allow the transition towards reconciliation. In them, the loss is approached from a more objective and calm perspective, and from a transcendental conviction of the permanence of the bonds.
Subsequently, Franz Schubert's Litanei emphasizes the rest of souls in a song that celebrates and pays homage to all saints on their day. Next, the Intermezzo from Robert Schumann's Liederkreis Op. 39 refers to the joy and permanence of the beauty through a contrasting and succinct tone. For its part, “Morgen!” by Richard Strauss, is a statement of worthy acceptance of becoming. Finally, the only piece of the program belonging to an opera (O du mein holder Abendstern from Tannhäusser), could be considered in essence, another Lied. Following the Germanic tradition of the 19th century, Wagner uses the dramatic resources typical of his stage-musical production in a piece that shines with its own light.
