"Something happens but it´s not said" : An approach to the representations about menstruation of the young men and women of Colegio Colombia Hoyrésumé
Abstrait
Sex education in Colombia, and specifically the issue of menstruation, shows huge gaps in both the content and the methodologies implemented. Thus, Colegio Colombia Hoy and its students are framed in this problem and the representations that young people in the last grades have about menstruation have been formed by the education they receive both from their families and at school. The present work wants to analyze how the sexual education received by the young people of Colegio Colombia Hoy affects the representations that they themselves know about menstruation. Therefore the research is based on an ethnographic study in the institution, where tools such as body mapping, focus groups and ethnographic interviews were used, focused at the students of the school, to account for the representations of menstruation they have made. Understanding menstruation as a historical, social, cultural and even political phenomenon, critical menstruation studies are taken up again, in order to show the gaps and taboos that mark the experience of menstruating women and bodies; experience that continues to be determined by pain, shame, silence and patriarchal oppressions.
